Why so much poverty?
I look around everyday and see so much poverty, it makes me so upset and sad. I also see so many people with so much money, but are greedy and do not like to share. Most wealthy people ask why should I share my success with people who don't even try to earn a living? Well we found out in class most people on welfare are trying to get back on their feet, but it is difficult, and they could use some help. Why is it so hard for the government to help with the struggles of health care? Then there is the issue of gender, race, class, age and the ability in the discussion of work and health care. Women we learned in class have always gotten lower pay then men, sixty cents to a mans dollar. I think depending on the job, because some woman can't do mens job and some men can't do womans job, but if a man and a woman are lets say working for the same law firm, then I don't see why the pay is different. Race is a huge issue. We all know whites get better pay than blacks, latinos, etc. Why I don't know exactly, but I know it has always been that way, even if the blacks are doing a higher paying job, they fail to get paid the right amount. Ageism is so wrong, I feel if the person is able to get the job completed with no harm to them, others or the company, why not let them work. I also feel strongly about helping someone one who is in need and trying but just can't quite get there. I packed food for haiti recentlyand I felt great because I knew I was making a difference. My group alone packed enough for 81 kids for a year. If more people would help each other we could make a huge impact on others lives.

Violence

Where does violence come from is the main question and how can you stop it from happening when it starts is the second question. So many thing cause violence to happen, like economic stress, dysfunctional families, racial issues, alcohol and drug abuse, culture problems and even isolation. With using violence some people think they can get away with certain things. For example, money, possession, power, control, respect, self-worth and sexual needs. Violence is displayed mostly by men, but each day I hear more and more about women switching roles and beating their boyfriend or husband up. The statistics for women getting beat, because they didn't want to paricipate in sex is 1 to 3, those numbers scare me. There are four main violences against women and they are domestic, sexual, stalking, and dating violence. I myself have been stalked before and it was one of the scarest things I have ever been through in my life. In class we learned that there is a cycle of how violence starts and begins. First the abuse occurs, second reconciliation and making up, third there is a calm period, fourth there is tension-building and then first step starts over. What hurts me the most is the picture of the women from the beginning to the end. I don't think anyone should have to go through that much pain and then if they have a family the women don't know how to get out. I feel like this subject of violence should be talked about more to make people aware of this crazyness. We also have the government and the media having most people think violence is alright. For example the magazine articles and billboards having men take control over women. That the death penalty and lethal injection is alright to do, because they are bad people. Some people think stealing candy makes a person bad, so is it alright to kill them? There are so many question and very few answer on the subject of violence. Will we get violence under control or will it be this way until our time?
Disabilities
I have a friend who is a sign language major and she wants to do some amazing things for people who are deaf. So many people are unaware of how things work for the deaf and how great they are and to appreciate them. I use to be one of those people. Since the beginning of the school year I went with her to so many deaf nights out. The first one I went to, I was so nervous and had no idea how to approach them. The waiter I guess had the same feeling because she never really went to the table where there was only deaf people and they took offense. I believe that's when my eyes opened up. I also felt like I would disrespect them in some way. I was so wrong about everything, they are the sweetest people you can meet. They can do everything we can do except hear and they are so funny. By going with my friend I learn so much and I also learned some sign language. I found out how much they do for people with the disability, like great camps and programs to make it aware to everyone. I went to one of their programs called ASL idol and I took my brother with me. The theme was Michael Jackson songs, I had the best time. I use to put deaf people with other types of disabilities into a category without realizing I did. I learned that you can't do that and not to even call being deaf a disability, because it isn't, they don't look at their disability as a disability, but more of a gift. They touched me in ways they will never know and they opened my eyes so I can see clearly.

Modern Men vs. Traditional Men

Most modern men don't care if their wife works or decide to stay home and take care of the kids. Most modern men want their wives or girlfriends to be able to take care of themselves financially and in many other ways. Most modern men are there own person and don't need their wife or girlfriend to do everything for them, because they realize they are more than capable of doing it themselves. Most modern men are independent and want the same for their wives. Most traditional men want their wives at home taking care of kids, cooking, cleaning the house, and doing the laundry. Some traditional men call their wives constantly, not wanting anything just checking up on them. Their wives have no privacy, no freedom, basically no life. They both show respect for women but in different ways. I am a modern female, I want a modern man, well that's what my dad thinks will be best for me. He says he feels sorry for the man I marry if he is traditional. My dad is a very traditional man. For example he has to meet everyone I date and hang out with. I am against a man being over me, we should be equal in the relationship, as far as taking care of the kids, the house, and the finances. If a man can't handle it then he should look for someone else.
School Spirit

At the last home game I decide to go all out with the face painting and T shirt, long blue socks, etc. My RA in my dorm told me that which ever hall had the most people show up and show the most school spirit would win a pizza party with the basketball team. So when I heard this it just got me more pumped up. So almost everyone on my hall got faced painted for the game, but everyone said I was the best and should win. So we all got on the chariot to go to the game. When we get there it wasn't a big turn out so I wasn't worried I knew I was winning, but as the minutes roled by more people started coming through the door, but still I had tons of confidence. When I looked around I still had the overall best outfit on. As the game went on, right before half time the man in charged approached me saying you have the most school spirit and they showed me on the big screen, I was so excited. So when half time came they always call some one down to play a game, this time whoever had the most school spirit. I thought for sure it was going to be me, but I was so wrong. So I look down at the court and he got three girls that were half dress, just in their bras with UNCG across their chest to come down and play the game I was so upset, but I got over it. It just prove how sexiest people really are and that they like less clothing then, great quality.
"The Job"
I will start off by saying I will not name the place where I am employed. I have been working at my previous job for two years in April. Why have I been there that long, I don't know probably for the money, which isn't that great? I have no idea how I got hired, because I am black, maybe I got hired because I am a female and very classy. We have been talking about the ism's in class and my experience working there I have noticed two, sexism and racism. When I first started everything was going well, they treated me with respect, but as soon as they really got to know me, that's when the racism and sexism started. They began to pick at the way I talked and use the saying " you people", ummm I wonder what they meant? I gave an application to a young African American male who came into the store one day and was that a mistake. My manager approached me afterwards saying people who come into the store looking like that shouldn't get an application. He was talking about "Black" people. Like I said earlier I have been working there for two years in April and since I have been there two black females have quit and none has been hired and when I say none I mean NO African American male or female. I also have noticed if you have a pretty face and a nice body you are working there the next day, isn't that something. My mom hates that I had to go through something so horrible, but I never thought racism and sexism was so bad until I experienced it myself. I hope no one else have to go through anything similar to what happened to me. What I just blogged about isn't half of it...
